IDEA
We believe that Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA) are essential to science and research. The Su Materials Lab is passionate about cultivating IDEA and helping develop the next generation of scientists. We are involved in a variety of efforts and committees to promote IDEA principles at Berkeley Lab and more broadly.
CAMPS - A partnership between Berkeley Lab and Navajo Technical University
CAMPS (Controlling Additive Manufacturing Properties of Surfaces) is a project funded by the DOE BES-RENEW program that established a partnership with Navajo Technical University (NTU), the largest Tribal University in the country. CAMPS supports internship programs for NTU students to come to Berkeley Lab and to gain research experience and engage in career and professional development opportunities. CAMPS internships are integrated within Berkeley Lab's Workforce Development & Education program. The research objectives of CAMPS are to understand and control the microstructure of metal alloys fabricated via 3D printing. The Su Materials Lab leads the LBNL efforts within the CAMPS program. CAMPS held its first internship in the summer of 2024, hosting three Native American students from NTU at Berkeley Lab.
SAGE Camp
Science Accelerating Girls' Engagement in STEM (SAGE) is a one-week summer camp for Northern California high school students hosted by Berkeley Lab to share what life is like in STEM professions. Multiple members of the Su Materials Lab volunteer to participate in SAGE Camp.
Berkeley Lab IDEA in Research Working Group
The IDEA in Research Working Group is a Lab-wide working group that seeks to share best practices and integrate DOE guidance into LBNL activities. Greg is the Energy Sciences Area representative in this Working Group. One of the first tasks of this group is to develop guidelines for the DOE PIER plans.
American Physical Society Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (APS-IDEA)
The Berkeley Lab APS-IDEA chapter brings together staff from multiple Areas and divisions across the lab to interface with APS-IDEA groups from other institutions to learn about theories of change, exchange ideas, participate in topical cohorts, and help organize conferences like the CU*IP. Greg currently serves a co-chair of LBNL's APS-IDEA committee.
Joint CSD-MSD IDEA Committee
This committee was formed in 2024 and seeks to build collaboration between the Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) and Materials Sciences Division (MSD) to develop and implement IDEA strategies.
